Why I made this
For a long time I have really really wanted a routine app on my pebble smartwatch! I have a routine app on my phone but find that my mornings are either ruined because I either:
- Follow the routine app on my phone, and then get distracted by it.
- Don’t follow the routine app on my phone, and forget to do my routine, or forget to do everything in my routine.
With the watch I guarantee it’s on my wrist when I wake up, and that I can start my routine without any potential distractions.
Why it had to be a pebble
Modern smartwatches are bulky, slow, and always on the charger. I found myself going back to the pebble because even though the company went bankruupt several years ago, my old watch still has a longer battery life than modern smartwatches (3-4 days and the screen is always on). And they are bringing the pebble back again in 2025 boasting up to 30 days of battery life!
What I got done
I built this routine app during the rebble hackathon #002. Within the hackathon I created:
- A full fledged setting app with frontend data validation
- A pebble app with pre-built routines
- A cat drawing (The cat is designed like an hourglass to represent time)
During the hackathon I re-learned all the lessions from my college classes - fighting pointers of pointers to character pointers, causing memory leaks, and making sure my strings were properly terminated. After 6 years in the industry I can confidently say python has spoiled me haha. It was still a lot of fun and I enjoyed it very much. Big thanks to the Rebble crew for organizing this and I’m so glad I got to participate in hackathon 😄
After the hackathon I spent time cleaning up the code, optimizing memory, moving data into the pebble store, and linking up the configuration page to the pebble app. If you’ve got the pebble, you can try out the app on the rebble app store today!
